Stitchem is a small workwear clothing business providing providing women’s workwear, men’s workwear, protective equipments and footwear to tradesmen working in the construction and building industry.

The construction, building and tradesmen have been hard hit by the global financial crisis. Houses over $500,000 are not selling despite the Australian government First Home Owner Grant, new building projects have be placed on hold and people are turning to DIY projects to cut cost. So what do you do if you’re a supplier to these industries?

The answer is making sure your business stand out and be memorable to your customers. According to Ade, one of the owners of Stitchem, here are are tips to make sure your business stand out:

  1. Get to know your customer well. Be able to talk and joke with them like you would to a friend.
  2. Know what workwear or footwear products are in demand and have them in stock at all time but make sure you can sell them fast.
  3. Tradesmen are busy people so have their product ready when they’ve ordered so they can pick their workwear orders up and leave, or hang around for a few jokes if they want to but at least they’re not hanging around because they’re forced to.
  4. Have a wide range of product so you can sell to a wider group of people. Stitchem sells women’s workwear, men’s workwear, protective equipment such as gloves and googles and sturdy footwear from brands such as Caterpillar and Aimont.
  5. Upsell but don’t be pushy. If someone is buying a King Gee shirt, see if they need new King Gee pants to go with it.

In tough time, small business owners have to become smart marketer or they will wear themselves out before someone wears their workwear.

What can you do in your business to make it stand out from the competition?
